5. Creative Wall Coverings - The solution to boring decor may not be as difficult as you think. Decorative paint, wallpaper, borders, or a combination of all three can help wake up your walls. Check out these ideas for a solution that you just may want to try in your home this weekend.

Eye-Catching Paint

Generally, paint costs less and is a smaller investment than wallpaper: If you don't like it, you can paint or paper over it. You can also use paint techniques, such as sponging or ragging, to create wallpaper like interest. Plenty of art stores and community colleges offer courses that teach the basics of decorative painting. Try sponging, which can create a natural, mottled look; washing, which produces a crisscross pattern; and ragging, which can simulate the effect of leather or stucco.

Wallpaper Wonders

If you're considering wallpaper, take note of some trends. Today's wallpaper options feature texture, shine, and glamour. Textured wallpapers such as faux wood grains can be used in both the log-cabin and the more refined country-cottage look. Especially popular are wallpapers that resemble leather and other exotic skins, such as tortoise or snake. Wallpapers that are made from plant materials are also experiencing a wave of popularity.

Creative Combinations

Consider unexpected combinations of paint and wallpaper. For instance, to create a rustic look, consider using a faux-log wainscoting on the lower half of a wall and a wood grain wallpaper treatment on top. Or cut out some features of a large design and arrange the pieces in an unconventional pattern on a painted wall.

Border Basics

In times past, wallpaper borders did little but top a wall of decorative paper. Now they're being used vertically, horizontally -- not only atop a wall, but halfway down -- and standing alone on a white or painted wall. They help define spaces by placing boundaries where there are none or accenting boundaries that are already there.

Work the Room

Be mindful of other furniture and accessories when selecting vibrant wallpaper. If you choose a metallic pattern, for example, don't make it compete with overly vivid furniture or wall hangings. Conversely, a muted wallpaper pattern calls for more lively furnishings and accessories.

Look Up

Don't neglect your ceilings. In contrast to trends in previous years, today's ceilings boast color, pattern, and detail. Painted ceilings complement wallpapered walls and give a room a complete look. Warm colors can make a large space or high, vaulted ceilings appear cozier and more intimate. Architectural accents, such as over-door pieces, offer an elegant look that can also draw the eye toward the ceiling.
