Make Your Home Dreamland (Part VIII)

8. Paint Blocks - Here’s how to use a simple paint technique to liven up your walls. You just measure, tape off sections, and apply glaze and color. It's easy with rectangles and squares, or experiment with shapes of your own making.

Here are some simple paint technique to create walls you'll worship and for these we need Shapes & Stripes.

Shapes & Stripes

a. Big Blocks - No one calls you blah, and you certainly don't want to be accused of spending time in an institution. So make your rooms reflect your spirit. Think of those bland white walls as a giant clean slate. A clever paint technique is exactly what you need. Have fun, add some drama and go a little nutty.

Think of it as art. And, yes, you are the artist. Just cluster geometric shapes to create a focal point above your hardworking desk. The placement of your furniture will determine the height and width of the design. Let instinct be your guide, and layer different sizes of rectangles and squares onto the area.

Shades chosen from the same paint strip will make a subtle point of interest. Start your design with the darkest shade and be sure to let each layer dry before you start the next. Remember, less is more.

If you want to make a bold statement, choose bright hues bordered by white. Choose at least five complementary colors to ensure enough variety and avoid color collisions. After you draw the rectangles, count them and divide by the number of colors. That will tell you how many rectangles to paint in each color. The instructions here will take you through the process step-by-step.

b. Suble Stripes
Raise the roof with broad horizontal stripes in soft colors. Select three shades of the same color, painting the lightest over the entire wall first. After it dries, mark level lines and tape off the top and bottom areas. Paint the darkest shade in the top area and the medium shade on the bottom. The horizontal design makes the room look bigger and oh-so-chic just like that. The skills you need are just like those for painting blocks.

Now how to do it:

For making Paint Blocks we need:

1. Colored pencils

2. Large level with ruler

3. Small (6- to 8-inch) level with ruler

4. An odd number of paint colors

5. Clear glaze

6. Low-tack painters' tape

7. 1-1/2 to 2-inch paintbrush

8. Small paint rollers

Instructions:

1. Measure the wall and decide what size rectangles (or stripes) you want, taking into account whether there will be borders between them. A 12- x 10-foot wall could have thirty 2-foot squares flush to one another. Begin your design at the ceiling and move down; let it run out at the floor if needed.

Use a level and colored pencils to map out your design on the wall. Colored pencils don't smudge like lead pencils, and they help you keep track of what color should go where when you get to painting. The best levels have rulers printed on them, and you will probably want two for the job: a large one for big spaces and a small one for tighter areas, such as below windows or in corners.

2. Use low-tack tape to mark off each section for painting. Any paint should be completely dry (at least overnight) before you tape off the next section. Tape just inside the colored pencil lines so the paint will cover them. Press firmly on the tape to get a crisp edge once it's removed.

3. The trick to clean lines is clear glaze. Before applying colors, use a small brush or roller to paint the glaze along the tape inside the design. The glaze dries clear but seeps under the tape to seal the edge so the color will stay true to the tape edge.

4. Apply color using a small roller, once the glaze is dry as instructed by the manufacturer.

5. While the paint is still wet, carefully remove the tape. Do it slowly so you don't pull up any paint with the tape.
