9. Paint It Pretty - With affordable paint, stamps, and stencils, these two ordinary bathrooms become bright and budget wise solutions that are sights for bored eyes. So if your bathroom is blah, blah, blah, take heart and use these techniques to create a showy sight to behold.

Here are two techniques to paint your bathroom pretty and more pretty. These are Just Ducky and Dazzling Desings.

Just Ducky - This lighthearted scheme is swimmingly easy to create. The upper walls are color-washed, the lower walls are striped, and a wordy border separates the two.

For this we need:

1. Decorator's wall glaze

2. Latex paints in white, cobalt blue, and yellow

3. Blue colored pencil

4. Tape measure

5. Carpenter's level

6. Acrylic crafts paints in white and orange

7. 2-1/2-inch-wide flat paintbrush

8. Artist's paintbrush

9. Stencil and artists brushes

10. Black paint marker

11. Duck stencil (available at craft stores and home
centers)

12. Stencil letter kit

Instructions:

To get your ducks in a row:

1. Paint a base. Apply a white base coat to walls.

2. Mark border. Using the colored pencil and level, draw a horizontal line 2 inches above the back of your sink. Draw another horizontal line 6 inches above the first line. Tape off just below the top line.

3. Mix glaze. Mix 8 parts decorator's wall glaze to 1 part cobalt blue paint. Apply blue glaze to top section of wall, using the 2-1/2-inch-wide paintbrush in a crosshatch motion. Feather edges and corners. Remove tape.

4. Paint stripes. Tape off just above the bottom line. On the lower section of the wall, draw vertical lines equally spaced (8 inches apart). Hand-paint every other stripe with blue glaze. (Edges and streaks should be imperfect, so don't tape off the stripes before painting.) Remove tape. Let glazes dry overnight.

5. Paint duck stencils. Paint duck stencils in desired placement within the top section of wall. First, paint the white background using the stencil, then the yellow body, then the orange beak; let dry. Outline duck with black paint marker; add wings and a curly tail.

6. Fill in the stencil design. Tape off the 6-inch border; paint with yellow paint. Let dry; remove tape.

7. Stencil the text. Stencil "rub a dub dub" across the border, using a stencil letter kit. Outline the border with marker, letting the lines be imperfect.

Quick Tips:

To create the stencil, purchase two sheets of thin acetate, available at crafts stores. Lay over the duck pattern. Using a black marking pen, trace around the white outline; cut out the interior with a crafts knife. Trace the black outline of the duck onto second sheet of acetate; cut out the interior. Trace the beak on an unused section of acetate; cut out.

When color-washing, use a wide brush to apply the glaze in a crosshatch motion. Be sure you don't overwork the paint, you want all the streaks to show. For projects such as these that give your paintbrush a workout, use cheap, disposable brushes.

Dazzling Designs - Lighthearted colors and imperfectly painted details keep this English-style bathroom from looking too stuffy.

For this we need:

1. Decorator's wall glaze

2. White acrylic paint

3. Artist's acrylic paints in teal, yellow, and white

4. Tape measure and carpenter's level

5. Yellow colored pencil

6. Painter's tape

7. 2-1/2-inch-wide flat paintbrush

8. 1-1/2-inch-wide flat paintbrush

9. Stencils in plate, tray, and teacup designs

10. Stencil paints in desired colors

11. Stencil paints in desired colors

12. Gold paint pen

Instructions:

1. Paint a base. Apply a white base coat to your walls.

2. Mix glaze. For each color, mix 2 parts decorator's wall
glaze to 1 part water; add desired amount of artist's acrylic.

3. Define the upper wall. If you don't have a chair rail like we do here to define the upper wall, use the level and colored pencil to draw a horizontal line 50 inches above the floor, then tape off just below the line. Apply teal glaze to the upper wall using the wide paintbrush; let dry. Using the artist's paintbrush, apply a series of dashes and dots in white, yellow, and teal glazes along the ceiling line. (The accent teal glaze should be more concentrated than the wall glaze.) Next, stencil plates, trays, and teacups where desired. Remove tape.

4. Prepare lower wall. For the lower walls, tape off at bottom of upper wall. Use the wide paintbrush to apply yellow glaze to lower portion of wall; remove tape and let dry. To make the ribbon stripes, dip the 1-1/2-inch-wide paintbrush into teal wall glaze, barely wetting the ends. Drag the brush down the wall in a wavy motion for an imperfect look.

5. Finish sink area with flowers. For the sink section, use the wide paintbrush to apply teal glaze; let dry. To make the flowers, use white glaze and an artist's paintbrush to freehand paint six-petal flowers in a random pattern. When dry, partially outline with the gold paint pen.

Quick Tip:

Any time you're trying a new decorative paint technique, experiment first on a piece of poster board. This is particularly important when mixing your own glazes, as you want the color concentration to be correct before you start painting the walls.
