World Of Antiques

I am not an expert on the subject of antiques. During my school days, this word existed only in the dictionary to me. It was only in college that I was introduced to this hobby by my friend and what started as merely a mild curiosity, had how become a glorious passion for me. Not many people believe that it is an expensive hobby. Certainly this statement is true but it is also true that many antiques are easily affordable and can be bought for a musical composition.
An antique is an object which is very old and has artistic value although opinions differ concerning age. Many collectors insist that for an object to be called an antique it should be more than 100 years old. But age is not only factor which makes people avid collectors. Glass and ceramics are one of the fascinations in the world of antiques, Veniu was the center of European world glass making in the 1200s and from there it spread to other countries. In 1670, George Ravencroft of England, perfected the art of making lead crystal, Germany made thick engraved glass. Cut glass was first made in the 1700s.
European potters learned how to make porcelain from the Chinese, and the Chinese style greatly influenced famous porcelain factories like serves in France, Chelsea in England and Meissen in Germany. 18th century blue and white porcelain and wine glasses are quite popular. Bohemian glass, Samson, Stafford shire, Wemyss and Royal Dulton figures sell for attractive prices. Oriental antique are a class apart and include objects made out of porcelain, bronze, ivory, jade, hard stone that is resin, amber, coal and wood. Apart from being decorative items like clocks, tables, chairs and jewellary are functional too.
Finds at excavations like Mohenjadaro and Harappa help us to know more about the by gone civilizations. On the flip side, investment in antique can be risky and unpredictable. The collector will find that consulting dealers visiting museum collections and pursuing his own reading will guide him wisely and provide an enjoyment and excitement second to none.
