Ghazal queen Peenaz Masani was in her element at the Nobel Laureates Science Conclave at the IIIT-A. Her soulful, foot-tapping ghazals kept the young and old - the students, their professors and the Nobel Laureates spellbound for over two hours.
Peenaz opened her act with the Ganesh Vandana, "since Allahabad is the land of the sangam of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati and is a very pious place". She then rendered a ghazal by Saeed Rahi and also sang ghazals by poets like Jigar Muradabad and Mumtaz Rashid. Her rendition of Mirza Ghalibsaab's Dil-e-Naadaan, tujhe hua kya hein was simply fabulous.
Peenaz who has done an album of Ghazals with music director O P Nayyar titled Tuhi mera dil, tuhi mera jaan sang a ghazal by Nayyar saab titled, Aao huzoor, tumko sitare mein le chalu. She ended with the all time favourite Duma dum mast kalandar but not before giving the students a very soulful Le Maashale chal pade log mere gaon ke, ab andhera jeet lenge log mere gaon ke.
Peenaz did two versions of Duma dum mast kalandar - the classical, quintessential version as well as her own version. Both got the entire audience on their feet and clapping and hooting at the same time.
A visibly excited Peenaz said after the show was over, "These students have so much energy. So much power to change the world." Her message to the audience that also included the Nobel Laureates was that of happiness, togetherness, proactive ness and the radiation of positive energy.
Peenaz has recently returned from a very successful tour organized by the Ministry of External Affairs. The tour covered nations and cities like Vietnam, Jakarta, Bali, Rangoon and Japan. The tour was meant to take Indian culture and music to various cities across the continent, says Peenaz.
She is also a part of the UNICEF sponsored citizens alliance - a group of prominent citizens that also includes MPs like Sachin Pilot - and whose aim is to bring down malnutrition from the current 47 per cent to 37 per cent in three years. She is involved in various social and charitable works and performs almost free for charity.
Summing up her message to the youth and students of today, Peenaz says, "Life is a precious gift of the Lord, Live it well."
