In our country it is mainly the mother’s responsibility to bring up the children. Mother is the one who takes care of all her children. She takes care of children’s physical and mental growth. Also people blame mostly the mother if her child does not behave well. Remember, it was always Yashoda who had to listen to the complaints of the people, but not Nanda. Today, as I find more mothers here, I am tempted to narrate my interpretation of Ramayana to you.
Ramayana is a story of three mothers, who brought up four sons with great love and care. The eldest of them was Kowsalya, who taught her only son, Rama, ethics and morals. As a result, Rama started obeying whatever his father asked him to do. Another mother, Kaikeyi, taught her only son, Bharatha, to love brothers and to respect the elders.
The third mother, Sumithra whom I consider as the wisest had two sons, the twins, Lakshmana and Satrughna. It was very clear that Sumithra’s sons had no right to claim the throne, unlike Rama or Bharatha. But they were also equally respected and loved by all the people, like the other two brothers. Usually twins move together, but the wise Sumithra divided them and made them mingle with Rama and Bharatha. Lakshmana was emotionally attached to Rama and Satrughna to Bharata.
There was always an unanswered question in the minds of many people of Ayodhya about the heir apparent. If somebody moves closely with Rama, there was a possibility that Kaikeyi getting angry and if somebody was close to Bharatha, Kowsalya may not be happy. But the wise Sumithra can be happy in either way. At the same time both Lakshmana and Satrughna were very friendly and affectionate with all. Both were well known for their good behaviour, valour and courage.
Sumithra prepared both her sons for all eventualities, which made them comfortable whether they stayed in ‘Ayodhya’ or in ‘Aranya’. They withstood through any situation because of the training and support given to them by their mother, Sumithra. Lakshmana did not even hesitate to follow Rama to deep forests and Satrughna bravely accepted the responsibility of the empire, in need. All the four brothers stood by their promises even through their most difficult days. Ultimately it was Satrughna, who ruled the country for the fourteen years till Rama came back to the throne after completing his ‘vanavasa’ period. At the same time both Lakshmana and Satrughna were neither selfish nor proud even if they knew that they were capable of doing any job.
The greatness is Sumithra’s, who brought up her sons to be like real heroes. All mothers must learn a lesson or two from Sumithra to mould their children’s character and career. Sumithra’s sons are wise, unselfish, brave, loyal, affectionate and lovable. Both are good leaders and also good followers.
If all the mothers show such intelligence to mould their children they too will be respected by one and all in this materialistic world, with their capabilities, good behaviour and charm. I wish all mothers to provide such guidance to their children to get glory and success in all their endeavours.
