Nowadays it has become an integral part of discussions at every forum to criticize the growing ‘Obscenity’ in media and on Internet. Although I am not advocating the cunning marketing strategy being adopted by the Print & Electronic Media, yet I would like to add that it is ridiculous on part of us that we out-rightly put the entire blame on former rather than quizzing ourselves first.
This customary loathing reminds me of an old joke. A lady complained to a ‘Dictionary Writer’ his Dictionary contains many ‘Dirty’ words. The ‘Author’ replied, “Madam, you must have searched those words in the Dictionary, then only you could know that they exist there. If you are so virtuous why did you look for the ‘Dirty’ words at all?” And the author was absolutely correct.
Because WE GET ONLY WHAT WE SEEK.
It is happening around me everyday that people condemning the National Dailies and Internet for serving ‘Obscene’ material. My question to them is, that besides porn-sites, Internet virtually has an unlimited ‘Information Warehouse’ and the Newspapers contain 40 more pages also, which contain only serious News and Articles. Then why the hell they go through those ‘Particular Columns’, ‘Pages’ or ‘Websites’ which according to them are ‘Unhealthy’ and ‘Evil’ for the ‘Younger Generation’ or ‘Family People’?. You come across the ‘Objectionable’ material because you look for it. No business continues unless it has a buyer or subscriber. Neither Internet nor Newspapers are providing such things for amusing themselves. Since there are takers, they are serving it before us. It is no solution to discontinue subscribing Newspapers or disconnecting the Internet to get the tag of being ‘Righteous’. Rather than it is a matter of debate whether it is Ue or the Media which has degenerated more. Can an Editor make you ‘Read’ something or an ‘ISP’ force upon a website on you. Had it been so we all would have turned into ‘Financial Consultant’, or a ‘Dharma Guru’ or an ‘Encyclopedia on Legs’ just by keenly going through the ‘Business’ or ‘Spiritual’ section of the Newspaper and ‘www.britannica.com’. But, we failed to transform ourselves because everybody prefers ‘Spicy’ Junk Food over ‘Boiled’ Vegetables, though they are make healthy diet. Should not we, therefore, do some logical, neutral, and ethical self-introspection in-house first, before accusing others ‘Ruthlessly’?
If we are a ‘Vegetarian’, does the ‘Chicken Shop’ in our market make us uncomfortable? Or, we are forced to turn to ‘Carnivorous’ from ‘Herbivorous’? If no, then why does not the above theory apply on us?
The reason is simple. We are born with ‘Double Face’; one for our ‘Society’ and one for our ‘Privacy’. We change it as per our convenience and need of the hour.
And this attitude doesn’t stop here either. The worst aspect of this human weakness gets exposed when it comes to assess self and others. We would find 10 faults with a person if we search for even one in him. But we won’t find even one in ourselves even if have 100.
Because WE GET ONLY WHAT WE SEEK.
I, therefore, would request everybody to ask himself one simple question in front of a Mirror. Are they portraying their honest persona before the society? Because:-
“Soney Key Frame Mein Jadwa Key Bhi Dekh Liya,
Aaina Kambakht Jhooth Bolta Hi Nahin.”
