Lucky Starr For Those With Piles

Treatment for piles and constipation usually requires consumption of medicines for a long time. However, now these ailments can be easily cured in just about an hour’s time with the help of a new technology called Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection (STARR).

Widely used and very popular in Europe, the treatment for piles and constipation by the STARR surgery is a new concept in India. It is performed by laparoscopy instead of consuming medicines.

At present, there are only four doctors all over India who are experts in STARR surgery. Among them is Dr. Ashwin Porwal, a renowned proctologist who regularly performs STARR surgeries at Inamdar Hospital in Pune.

Speaking to Pune Mirror, Dr. Porwal said, “Piles and constipation are ailments that are quite common across the masses but they are rarely spoken of or discussed.

The result is that the person suffering from them gets caught up in a never ending consumption of medicines for years and they provide only temporary relief. The STARR treatment is doing very well in Europe but in India, it has still not caught people’s attention.”

According to him, the surgery lasts between 45 minutes to an hour and is a day care procedure. Since the procedure is carried out through the normal opening, no post operative dressing is required. The patient can start work from the third day of the surgery.

When Pune Mirror spoke to Feliciana Dias (50), a resident of Pune who suffered from severe constipation for more than three years, she said, “Despite consulting several leading doctors from the city, I received no suitable treatment for my constipation.

I realised that constipation is curable only when I came to know about STARR surgery. Now, my life has become very normal post operation.

About starr surgery

STARR (Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection) is a surgical procedure that is performed through the anus. It requires no external incisions and leaves no visible scars. Using a surgical stapler, the procedure removes excess tissue in return and reduces the deformities that can cause ODS.

ODS is a form of chronic constipation that affects thousands of people (primarily women) in India. Patients undergoing STARR surgery are typically hospitalised for one to three days and have minimal recovery time after leaving the hospital.
