Ozone Eases Back Pain

Back pain has many causes and one of the significant cause is prolapsed disc or slipped disc. Almost every individual in his lifetime suffers from back pain. "It hits people a lot more than cancer and cardiac disease combined. You see them so much – it's a big, big problem," said Dr (Maj) Pankaj N Surange of Interventional Pain and Spine centre, Doctor Kares Hospital.
"Nowadays a lot of these patients are young, healthy people. If not taken care of early and adequately, patients can have chronic pain the rest of their life."

Back pain radiating down the legs-usually more on one side-often called sciatica or pinched nerve, is a common complaint.

Till now, surgery was the only option where rest and pain medications have failed. Now a minimally invasive, non surgical Interventional procedure of Ozone Discectomy or Ozonucleolysis can help patients with Disc Diseases.

According to a new meta-analysis presented at San Diego, California — Oxygen/ozone injections into herniated lumbar discs are equal in efficacy to surgical discectomy in the areas of pain relief and function outcome, but the complication rate is considerably lower and the recovery time is significantly shorter.
But not everyone is a candidate for the procedure.

Basically, patients with contained disc herniation that hasn't spread outside the ligament and has not developed weakness in their legs are good candidates, said Dr Surange, whose area of expertise is Spine Interventions.

The procedure is performed under local Anesthesia, as a day care basis with patients usually going home within two hours afterward. Special images are used to localize the target area, i.e Disc and Ozone is injected. Ozone helps in shrinkage of disc material and also helps in reducing the pressure on the nerves.

"Most have done extremely well," Dr Surange said, noting that he started doing the procedure three years back and most of the patients have reported fair or excellent results.

Nationally, ozone discectomy has a 70-80 % success rate and the procedure is now covered by many health Insurance companies.

For those who don't respond to Interventional procedures may go on to surgical option.

Ozoneucleolysis or Ozone discectomy: Has emerged as an affordable, least invasive approach and costs 2/3 of the price of conventional surgery. Usually one or two procedures are required at an interval of 2-4 weeks, depending on the condition of the disc and response of the treatment.
