Food habits and jobs profile the ready to cook, ready to serve and fully processed pacakaged food and beverages are becoming popular. With the introduction of modern technologies in the production ad processing of livestock and agricultural food produce, the concept food is shifting from survival to value added food industries have open up new avenues for employment and economy. It is estimated that food processing industries is growing and generating new jobs to extent of 2.5 lakhs every year. Agro processing sector is further expected to grow faster and generate more employment in the near future. It is estimated that Indian food is increase more than 5, 00, 000 crores by the end of the year 2005. The market of the value added specialized processed packaged food product will grow to Rs. 2, 30, 000 at the end of year 2005.
Development the food chain is likely to have strong benefits to economy, both in terms of income and employment.
Role of Food Technologist
The increasing world population and limited agricultural land has widened the gap between food requirement and production. This gap can be fulfilled by better post harvest management, by applying appropriate food processing techniques and qualified Food Technologist. Adoption of the latest and advanced processing technology can minimize losses, provide better quality and nutrition, more employment opportunities and ensure better relation with producer as well as consumer.
The Processing of food industry in India which made humble beginning in the early 30\'s are still lagging behind, as compared to its counterpart in the advanced countries. The progress of Indian food industry has been quite tardy, but the industry will get a boost after the WTO regime. More units with advanced techniques are coming up in the food processing
