He also finished as the Netherlands' leading wicket taker in the tournament. He followed this up by performing admirably in the 2006-07 World Cricket League where he topped Netherlands' batting and bowling averages. Born in South Africa, he cites Jonty Rhodes as his hero, and has played for Western Province. He is of Dutch descent, though, enabling him to qualify under the European Citizenship law to play county cricket. Daan van Bunge ( Allrounder )

Daan van Bunge is a gifted allrounder who represented his country at various age group levels, including the 1996 Under-15 World Cup in England and the Under-17 tour of the UK two years later, he made making his ODI debut in Sri Lanka in 2002. Prior to the 2003 World Cup in South Africa he spent three months over there, which paid dividends as he hit his highest ODI score of 62 against India and followed that by picking up 3 for 16 against England with his legspin, dismissing Nick Knight, Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff. His form going into the 2007 World Cup was patchy, and although he hit the headlines there is was for the wrong reasons as Herschelle Gibbs smashed him for six sixes in an over. Darron Reekers ( Allrounder )

Darron Reekers is a Jack of all trades for the Dutch. Built like Andrew Flintoff, he bats at the top of the order and hits the ball cleanly and a long way, with the sole intention of ruining opposing bowlers figures as well as their morale. His explosive knock of 45 from 48 balls against Sri Lanka in July 2006 demonstrated his ability to take apart all sorts of attacks. Despite his reputation with the bat, he began his career as a steady away swing bowler and it was his wicket-taking that first caught the eye and is what he is most valued for. Following stints in his native New Zealand with both his hometown club Canterbury and Otago, his golden season was 2001 in the Dutch League, averaging 65 with the bat and 16.85 with the ball. Ankle problems disrupted the end of that season but he returned to fitness for the 2007 World Cup. In 2009, he starred with 20 from 13 balls in Netherlands'shock win over England, the hosts of the ICC World Twenty 20, before retiring at th

Jeroen Smits ( Wicketkeeper )

For a long time, Smits struggled to break into the side with Reinout Scholte keeping him out, but he has improved significantly enough since his rival's retirement for him to be named as the sole wicketkeeper in Netherlands' World Cup squad, and vice captain too. His batting threatened to keep him out of the side but the selectors have kept faith and this will be his second World Cup. He lists Jack Russell as his favourite player and the victory over Namibia in the 2003 tournament in South Africa as his career highlight. He possesses a steady pair of hands and is an excellent motivator in the field. A popular member of the squad, he has plenty of tricks up his sleeve in the dressing room and is constantly initiating banter, although with own nicknames such as Piglet, he takes as much as he gives. For a long time, Smits struggled to break into the side with Reinout Scholte keeping him out, but he has improved significantly enough since his rival's retirement for him to

Peter Borren ( Batsman )

Peter is another of the Netherlands side to have originated from New Zealand where he played for Canterbury 'A' and the national Under-19s. Although he was taken apart on his ODI debut against Sri Lanka, taking 1 for 94 from his 10 overs, his performances in the World Cricket League in Kenya where he averaged 21.25 in his three games proved enough to earn him a place at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. He has shown some ability as a lower order batsman with a highest score of 49 in the 2006 ICC Intercontinental Cup. A natural talent, he had never been seriously coached until joining up with the Dutch squad, He is nicknamed Baldrick after the character in Blackadder, and has plenty to say to opposing batsmen while fielding.

Alexei Kervezee ( Batsman )

Alexei Kervezee made his first-class debut for his national team against Scotland in the Intercontinental Cup.Another of the new young breed and the best of the bunch. He has been ironically nicknamed "Rowdy" by his team-mates due to his quiet nature but, once in the middle, he is very difficult to faze. He has been signed on a two year contract by Worcestershire from the 2007 season where chief executive Mark Newton described him as "a very accomplished and exciting young talent," and Holland's bowling coach Ian Pont has described him as having "shades of Graeme Hick". His impressive 47 in Sri Lanka on debut certainly lends weight to his reputation and showcased his ability to build innings and the 2007 World Cup is likely to be a valuable learning curve for him. Only four other players have featured at the World Cup at the tender age of 17, one of them being Javed Miandad.

Mudassar Bukhari ( All-Rounder )

Mudassar Bukhari is a promising allrounder who has represented the Netherlands A side several times before his call to the full squad in June 2007. Although he is able to boast Test batsmen like Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Hafeez among his victims, he has often had a problem controlling the new ball and conceded ten wides in nine overs against the Pakistan and Sri Lanka A sides in 2006. Sometimes used as a pinch-hitter by his club, VVV, and country, his batting is better suited to the short form of the game so he is likely to come in at seven or eight in four-day matches.

Eric Szwarczynski ( Batsman )

Primarily an opening bat, Eric Szwarczynski started to play at 3 more regularly for his club during the 2005 season. Although he was born in South Africa, he represented both the Netherlands A side and their Under 23 team and featured in the 2006 ODI against Sri Lanka.

He is keen to add another string to his bow and has been working hard with the Netherlands bowling coaches with an eye to contributing overs in the one day game and being a partnership breaker in the longer form.
