About Dr.Vivek Pathak and Steroids free Transplantation

Kidney transplant recipients are required to take daily steroids as part of their anti-rejection medication (Immunosuppressive medicine). A number of studies and researches have shown that long term steroid usage results in many side effects. The usage may cause high blood pressure, increase the fat levels, cataract, bone weakness, weight gain, slow wound healing, diabetes. Excessive fat deposit on the face leads to uggly appearence. In significant number of cases, steroids can cause new onset diabetes which may not be there before transplantation. However, all patients may not face all side effects.
When things stood thus, a few nephrologists have begun practicing steroids-free kidney transplantation method. While it has become popular in the West gradually, the method is yet to gain momentum in India.
A beginning to popularize steroid-free transplantation is made in Coimbatore, a prominent industrial town in Tamilnadu. Dr. Vivek Pathak, an eminent nephrologists, and his team has so far performed hundreds of steroid-free procedure since many years. Dr.Pathak is currently with Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH), Coimbatore.
