Dr Anil Grover: A Cardiologist With a Heart
Ex Head Department of Cardiology, PGIMER Chandigarh (2000-2004), ex Professor of Cardiology, BPKIHS, Dharan Nepal(2006-07), Fellow Cardiology state University of New York, and Emeritus Editor of Indian Journal of Cardiology was born on September 22, 1958. He did his graduation with distinction from Medical College, Shimla after winning top positions and Gold Medals in five out of ten subjects of M.B;B.S. He was best graduate of the year 1981 from Himachal Pradesh University. He was selected for doing Masters degree in Medicine in PGI Chandigarh and stayed back to do D.M. degree from PGIMER in 1987. He joined faculty as lecturer in Cardiology in the department of cardiology PGI, Chandigarh in 1988 and stayed on to rise to the post of Additional Professor and Head. He was selected as Professor of Cardiology by the Ministry of External Affairs for BP Koirala Institute at Dharan, in Nepal where he served for over a year in 2006. In 1993 he went for a two year fellowship in cardiology in State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. Despite training cardiologists who are now serving from Srinagar to Trichanpulli, performing over 12000 cardiac catherisations (with over 3000 procedures in children as old as 10 Hours to a patienst as young as a Gentleman of 93 Yr.)-In his own words "Talent is God given and man should be humble.". He has many firsts to his credit introducing starting first foetal echocardiology in Inida, rural cardiology clinic as an outreach programme for RF/RHD in Raipurrani near Chandigarh where 128 village with population of over 33,000 children was adopted for providing tertiary cardiology care; in the United States he pioneered venous echocardiography technique which became the basis to show nitric oxide is involved in venodilatation and worked on unique technique of cardiomyoplasty. He recently worked on bridging the digital gap by connecting village hospitals to CCU of PGI. He has over 100 scientific publications in peer reviewed national and international Journals and he has won several awards for his work. Recently he was awarded Shiksha Rattan Puruskar by Indian International Friendship Society and was chosen also chosen by a publishing house as one of the Best Citizens of 2007. He was awarded Chiksaratan in Bangkok in 2010 and Vivekananda Award in 2011. He has authored health education books in Hindi and English. But to quote him again he says best reward for his work when a patient says 'thank you' even it is as toothless smile of 3 months old baby who cardiac defect has been cured by skilled hands of Dr Grover.
