Baramulla district


Baramulla district is bounded by Kupwara in the north, Budgam and Poonch in the southern parts of Srinagar and Ladakh in the east and Muzaffarabad(Pak-occupied) in the west. The district which is named after its headquarters was initially pronounced as VARAHMUL.The district is spread over 4588 Sq.Kms.and its population according to 1991 projections is approx.9 Lakhs.Administratively,it is divided into 8 tehsils viz Sopore, Gurez, Bandipore, Sonawari, Pattan, Uri,Tangmarg and Baramulla,14 community development blocks and 162 panchayats, besides about half a dozen towns. Baramulla is no different from other parts of Kashmir Valley.The food habits,dress pattern, customs and traditions are the same as followed in other parts of the Valley. Kashmiri is the main language of the people in the district.Pahari and Gojari are also spoken in Uri and areas near foot hills of Gulmarg and Bandipore.Sheena(Dardi) is the local language in Gurez and Tilail areas.Urdu is also spoken by people.

Historical Places and Monuments


This town lies on the east bank of Wullar lake and is also called the "Port of Wullar". The roads to Gurez and Gilgit lead from this town. A beautiful park at the pattern of Famous Nishat Bagh exists there.

It is a beautiful valley located 86Kms from Bandipopre. River Kishenganga flows through it.

This is an old town and remained capital of Kashmir during Shankervarman regime. It is 26 Kms from Srinagar.

Tourist Places


Fifty seven Kms.from Srinagar, Gulmarg, a meadow of flowers, is a world famous tourist resort situated at an altitude of 2730 meters. Surrounded by dense forests on all sides, Gulmarg is known for natural beauty and is rated as one of the matchless hill resort of the world. Gulmarg is besides its natural charm also famous for golf hikes. It is country's premierwinter sports resort. It is an ideal place for Skiing and Skating. The road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is beautifully lined with towering trees making a majestic drive. Gulmarg Gandola project has installed a number of Gondolas upto Kongdori and this ride is going to be extended upto Khilanmarg.

Manasbal Lake

This small lake is situated at distance of 32 Kms.from Srinagar.Its length is about 5 Kms. and breadth 1.20 Kms. The importance of this lake lies chiefly in its deep and clean waters and lotus flowers. Lotus roots(Nadroo) and water nuts grew in plenty there.


Watlab,over-looking the famous Wular lake,situated on the Sopore-Bandipore road is 56 Kms.from Srinagar and 8 Kms.from apple town Sopore.

River Jhelum

The river Jehlum is commonly known as "Veth" and runs a length of 203 Kms.in the Valley.It's main source is Verinag spring in Anantnag district.After passing through Srinagar city it flows into the Wular lake and then passes through Baramulla and Uri to Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

Kishan Ganag

The main source of the Kishan Ganga river is in Drass in Kargil district. After passing through the mountains and tracks of Tilail,Gurez,Keran and Arnah.It joins Jehlum river at Domel.The river is famous for its ice cold water and trout fish.It is also called "NEELUM" river.

Wullar Lake

This is the largest fresh water lake in Asia.Its length is 24 Kms. and Breadth is 10 Kms.This lake is situated between Bandipore and Sopore.In the centre of lake there is a small island called "Zaina Lank" which was constructed by famous King Zainul-Abi-Din.The lake is considered to be the remanant of Satisar lake of pe-historic times.From Srinagar the lake can be approached by road and through river Jehlum.


Gurez is abeautiful valley surrounded from all sides by lofty mountains,which is located 86 Kms from 123 Kms. from Srinagar.The Kishan Ganga river flows through it.The average altitude of this valley is 7800 ft.


Sopore town is also known as apple town.It is situated at a distance of 48 Kms. from Srinagar on the banks of river Jehlum near Wular lake.Sopore is the biggest trade centre in north Kashmir.
