Difficult Case of fracture pelvis managed by Total Hip replacement

The recent advances in technology can now help accident victims.

Here is an illustrative case.

Mrs. XYZ, a 55 year old matron in a hospital in Guwahati was traveling by road when her car met with an accident. She suffered a fracture of her hip bone. She was treated with traction in a local hospital and then transferred to a corporate hospital in Delhi.
In spite of fracture surgery she could not walk and was wheelchair bound. She had not walked after the accident for 6 months! See her xary before the surgery shown below.

Her CT scans revealed that the entire ball of her hip had collapsed and hence she could not walk. It was decided to treat her with a total hip replacement. Her blood investigations before surgery showed that she may have a low grade infection as well.

During the surgery a frozen section was done to rule out infection. Her fracture had not healed and that left a huge defect in her hip socket (acetabulum). A bone graft was taken from the femoral head (the ball part which had collapsed) to re-create her own socket. A metal on metal articulation was then inserted. The patient could sit up on the same evening. She was pain free after 6 months and now is walking around with the help of a walker. We expect her to walk without any walking aid in about 3 months and perform all the activities she was able to do before the accident.
This is her Xary after the surgery.
