Children like adults have tha basic right not to have scars on their body. That is all the more relevant as they have their entire life left. They will perhaps live longer than any of the adult patients. Nowadays most of the surgical diseases in children that in the yesteryears required laparotomy can be done by less invasive approach. We do laparoscopic appendicectomy, laparoscopic Ladd's procedure (a procedure to correct abnormal rotation causing vomiting), laparoscopic pyloromyotomy, laparoscopic herniotomy, laparoscopic orchidopexy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and choledocholithotomy, laparoscopic excision of choledochal cyst, laparoscopic reduction of intussusception, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, laparoscopic repair of diaphragmatic hernia and eventration of the diaphragm, laparoscopic lymph node biopsy, laparoscopic splenectomy, and so on. You almost name any procedure that required opening of the abdomen and now it is done laparoscopically. That has been possible because of the availability of miniature instruments suitable for infants and children and of course, development in the technique of pediatric anesthesia. We have successfully done most of these procedures in Kolkata.
The main advantages are cosmesis, no or minimal scar, less pain, early return to normal activity, early discharge from the hospital and overall minimal morbidity.
