Ivy Hospital proudly announces the launch of an awareness program for Type 1 Diabetic patients, named “PRAYAS – Defeating Type 1 Diabetes” under the stewardship of Senior Consultant Endocrinologist, Dr Gagan Priya.
Type 1 Diabetes is a form of diabetes which occurs when the body stops producing insulin. These patients must take insulin injections lifelong, in absence of which survival is not possible. Though this form of diabetes accounts for only 5-15% of all diabetics, it usually starts in childhood or teenage years.
Management of type 1 diabetes is quite challenging because of the need to take insulin injections daily (sometimes 3-4 times each day). It is also complicated by the need to monitor blood sugar regularly, adherence to a healthy diet pattern and regular meal timings. There is lack of adequate knowledge about the disease and apprehensions about the future. The family of a type 1 diabetic patient lives with the constant stress of managing their disease each moment of their life.
It is very important to empower these families with information and to educate them to live with diabetes. There are several support groups and forums for type 1 diabetic patients in countries like US or UK. However, there is a serious dearth of such programs in India. “Prayas – Defeating Type 1 Diabetes” is the first program of its kind to be started in North India, which intends to bring together these families and to assist them in their battle against Type 1 Diabetes.
The first educational activity of Prayas was held on 26th September 2009 at Ivy Hospital, Mohali. 45 patients and their parents, from Mohali, Chandigarh and nearby areas participated in this workshop. Through a very interactive session, Dr Gagan Priya educated these patients about how best to manage their disease and also about the latest developments in type 1 diabetes management, including stem cell therapy and demonstration of insulin pump. The meeting was also attended by Col. H. P. Singh, President of the Chandigarh Diabetic (Type 1) Association, an NGO formed by parents of type 1 diabetic children. As per Dr. Gagan Priya, the hospital plans to hold such workshops for Type 1diabetic patients at regular intervals under the project “Prayas”.
