With adoption becoming legally more difficult, and greater awareness of surrogacy as an option, many couples (and even individuals) that cannot otherwise bear children and have family are increasingly turning to surrogacy as a possibility to fulfill their parenthood dreams.

If you have had trouble conceiving, surrogacy may be a way for you to finally become a parent. When you choose this route, you become designated as an "intended parent." This is the start of a process that requires you to make numerous decisions.

Steps for All Intended Parents

1]
Decide if surrogacy is the right decision for you. You may want to consider in vitro fertilization or adoption. All of these options have significant expenses, but each has its own benefits and disadvantages.

2]
Choose between traditional or gestational surrogacy. You can lower your surrogacy costs by finding a traditional surrogate and using semen from a sperm donor. If you have frozen your own eggs, gestational surrogacy will be your best option and will provide you with a child that is biologically your own.

3]
Find a surrogacy agency or search for a surrogate on your own. Although you will spend more money by using an agency, they take care of everything for you, including finding and screening surrogates. Some agencies even have a representative present during your first meeting with your surrogate.

Traditional Surrogacy in India.

1]
Pick out your sperm donor. You may want to choose someone who characteristics similar to you and your partner.

2]
Select your surrogate. Traditional surrogates are sometimes harder to come by, since the process requires the women to use their own egg and part with a baby that is biologically bonded to them. Some intended parents are more comfortable using an experienced traditional surrogate, as they feel there is less risk of the surrogate wanting to keep the baby.

3]
Meet your surrogate, if it will make you more comfortable with the process. If you go through an agency, a representative may even attend your first meeting with the surrogate to make both parties more comfortable.

4]
Schedule an appointment to begin the artificial insemination process. More than one insemination may be necessary and you will have to decide whether you will want to attend the appointments with your surrogate.

Gestational Surrogacy in India.

1]
Single out an egg donor and a sperm donor. You will want to get the donor lined up first, so that you'll be ready to begin once you find the right surrogate.

2]
Settle on a gestational surrogate who meets your budget . Make sure that the person is emotionally stable, and that she has fully educated herself on the surrogacy process if she is doing this for the first time.

3]
Arrange the IVF appointments and plan to attend if you wish.

In India, surrogacy as a medical process has matured to the point where some clinics specialize in surrogacy (which generally means they have IVF-egg transfer facilities, help identify surrogates, and assist in the legal/contractual process), generally giving them more experience and a greater understanding of the process than U.S. and European clinics that focus primarily on the more traditional IVF.

All couples including lesbian and gay couples and even single men and single women can avail this facility to fulfill their dream of enjoying parenthood.
