This term is used to describe a mood disturbance experienced by approximately 50% of child bearing women within 3 to 6 days after delivery.

Reason:
Biochemical changes along with psychological stress are thought to be responsible. Women previously diagnosed to have psychiatric problems and having similar episodes in the previous pregnancy are at greatest risk.

Symptoms:
Depressed mood most of the day, diminished interest in most activities, significant weight loss or gain, difficulty to sleep, easy fatigability, feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt are symptoms of this condition.

Precautions:
Close observation in the first two weeks for all women after delivery. Caution to be observed in high-risk women.

Treatment:
Supportive treatment is sufficient in most cases. Sometimes psychiatric medicines need to be given for varying duration and then tapered off. In severe cases, the mother needs to be observed for suicidal tendencies and the baby may be isolated.
