Movie Report

Black Friday revolves around the series of events During, Pre and Post Mumbai blasts in 2003. It is based on the book by S. Hussain Zaidi.

In Mumbai on March 9, 1993 a man named Gul Mohammed claims at the Nav Pada police station that a series of bomb explosions are about to take place at strategic points of the city. Nobody believes him. And three days later on 12th March it is exactly what happens as predicted. The Twelve bomb explosions rip apart the city leaving 300 people dead and 800 injured.

Rakesh Maria (Kay Kay Menon), a top police official is given the job to get the responsible behind the bars. The investigation starts and vital clues in the form of vehicles and explosives used i.e. RDX lead to the conclusion that it is the handiwork of Tiger Memon (Pawan Malhotra), a businessman from Mahim who had taken funds from the Dubai underworld.

Soon on March14, 1993 Tiger Memon's secretary, Asgar Muqadam is arrested. After a lot of beating he reveals about the blasts. The police intensify their search and many suspects are jailed. But many are still yet to be apprehended. One of them is Badshah Khan (Aditya Shrivastava). He was one of the main aides of Tiger Memon and has been hiding after the incident. He is arrested on May 10, 1993 from his village in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. Opting for a safe approach he becomes a police witness.

He reveals to the police that the bombings were the result of Hindu and Muslim riots that took place between December 1992 and January 1993. Further investigations reveal that the The Dubai underworld wanted revenge because of the loss of Muslims in the riots. Tiger Memon too had revenge on his mind as his office was also burned in these riots. So he arranged for the task.

On November 4, 1993, the police file a charge sheet against 189 accused. The Central Bureau of Intelligence takes over the case. And on August 5, 1994, Tiger's brother, Yaqub Memon surrenders himself to the authorities. But Tiger Memon is still absconding.

1993 blasts revealed

This is a nice work from the director Anurag Kashyap in bringing forth the infamous Bombay blasts in a very sequential manner. For all those who don’t know about the 1993 blast or are curious to know about it then this is the most easiest and engrossing way to actually witness the series of the events which shook Bombay and its denizens.

Black Friday: A Black Day

Black Friday was indeed a Black Day in the history of India and Coincidentally this movie will release on Friday as well. Though the incident is about 13 years old it brings back the memories of troubled times. At the same time it also makes us aware of the culprits and how peace can be shattered in a matter of moments. This movie should inspire the concerned to bring justice to those who are still at large.

Another Reality based movie. 2007 will be known as the year of ‘Reality Movies’. We have Traffic Signal, Parzania, Undertrial and then there is – Black Friday. Very unconventional film showing the events related to March 1993 Mumbai blasts. Kay Kay Menon and Aditya Shrivastav have shown good acting.
