1971 is a war adventure dedicated to gallantry of 1971 war soldiers. It is the story of six Indian soldiers who are prisoners of war held by Pakistan. These soldiers are Major Suraj Singh (Manoj Bajpai), Subedar Ahmed (Chitaranjan Giri), Captain Kabir (Kumud Mishro), Captain Jacob (Ravi Kishan), Flight Lt. Ram (Manav Kaul) and Flight Lt. Gurtu (Deepak Dobriyal).
Suraj Singh is the leading man in the prisoner’s camp. He belongs to the 18 Rajputana Rifles and was captured in Uri sector when he ran out of ammunition. He is believed to have made two futile attempts to escape only to be punished severely. Back at home he has nobody and his only mission in life is to get back the rest to their homes and families.
Subedar Ahmed was in Major Suraj Singh's regiment to whom he served loyally. He belongs to a small town in Muslimabad. He is the only son of his parents and has a three month pregnant wife at home.
Captain Kabir is also from Major Suraj Singh's regiment. He is married and has an eleven year old daughter. He belongs to Pune. He respects Suraj Singh a lot. His dream is walking in the streets of Pune with his daughter and wife.
Captain Jacob is also married. He comes from Cochin. He is an explosive specialist and expert in topography. His skills are of great help during the sixsome’s escape. Back at home his wife is waiting for him to come back alive.
Flight Lt. Ram belongs to 21st Squadron MIG 21. He belongs to Delhi. He was shot down by the enemy and captured. His dream is to get married as soon as they return home.
Flight Lt. Gurtu also belongs to 21st Squadron MIG 21. Gurtu is from Srinagar. He and Ram are best friends since the days of their training. He too was caught along with Ram. Both Gurtu and Ram have a very unique sense of humour.
All these soldiers are daring to make an escape from the Pakistan prison to their native land. They only have themselves, their undying spirits and the love for their homeland to make it through this dangerous mission. But before they can cross the border they must face inhuman weather conditions, the hunting Pakistani officials, the tough terrain and the ever looming possibility of death in this life threatening journey.
