The tagline of Munna Bhai MBBS reads: He might just cure you. And he does. Without resorting to tired-and-tested gimmicks.
Not only does Sanjay Dutt's Munna Bhai , a good-hearted tapori , a local goon, cure you, but he also makes you laugh, even cry.
And the credit goes to FTII graduate and editor Rajkumar Hirani , who turns feature film director with this Vidhu Vinod Chopra production.
Sanjay plays tapori Munna Bhai, whose father (Sunil Dutt) thinks he's a doctor. The father wants Munna to marry his doctor friend's (Boman Irani) daughter Chinky, also a doc.
Hell breaks loose when Munna's sham is found out. The father is heart-broken, after being shown the door by his friend, Dr Asthana.
A dejected Munna takes up the challenge to become a doctor and marry Chinky ( Gracy Singh ).
The fun begins when Munna is let loose upon unsuspecting medical students and doctors. He fakes his way through in his bid to get a medical degree. And the only person not amused by his engaging tactics is Dr Asthana, our hero's Enemy No 1.
Macho man Sanjay injects the right amount of susceptibility to his character to be Munna, the messiah, who has a cure for every malady. But the real talent that shines in Munna Bhai is Irani ( Let's Talk, Darna Mana Hai ), who manages hysterical outbursts minus any histrionics.
Hirani's high point is definitely the script (co-written with Chopra), which leaves no gaping holes in the plot and employs humour considered restrained by Bollywood's standards.
One malady that could have been treated was the length, with fewer passable songs and slicker editing.
