Gaurav Gupta aka GG (Ajay Devgan) is the man who started with nothing and now believes that only money can fuel his ambitions. On the other hand, Guruji [Javed Sheikh], a leading industrialist turned philanthropist, believes that wealth means nothing if not used for society. Caught in the tussle between the two is the unworldly Jaidev Vardhan (Shahid Kapoor), who while respecting his father's philosophy, falls hook, line and sinker for GG's gilt-edged dreams.
While Guruji hopes that Jai will return to his roots, GG uses the glamorous Natasha (Bipasha Basu) to bewitch Jai and the unscrupulous politician Amrit Patil, to exploit the tribal into selling their lands. Madhavi (Amrita Rao) watches the man she loves being carried away in to a world of wine, women and wealth.
John M. Matthan's second outing, SHIKHAR, after SARFAROSH [Naseeruddin Shah, Aamir Khan, Sonali Bendre] could've been an entertaining cum thought-provoking film, but the film is a complete letdown. And the culprit is the loose screenplay. The first half of the film is quite interesting and intruiging. However post interval the story goes for a toss. What could have been an interesting film turned into a disaster. Matthan has shot the film competently, but as the writer of the film, along with Abbas Tyrewala, he ought to take the blame for letting go of an interesting idea.
Viju Shah's music is average. Cinematography [A.K. Bir] is first-rate. The performances in Shikhar are highly competent. Ajay Devgan excels in a negative role. Shahid Kapoor is very good. He matches up to Ajay in almost all sequences. Bipasha Basu is okay. Amrita Rao is wasted. Javed Sheikh gives a good account of himself. Rest of the cast lend able support. On the whole, SHIKHAR disappoints big time.(src: seasonsindia.com)
