Movie Report
Director Arindam Nandy's movie Via Darjeeling is an experiment that has come out with flying colours. It intrigues, involves and thrills all the viewers. All of them are not just mute spectators but are as actively involved, as the friends are who are discussing the missing link in the plot. At the end, it does not give you all the answers but leaves you with a lingering feeling or what if, or why this?
The National Film Development Corporation of India co-produces 'Via Darjeeling' and since it's an overload of talented actors and a cinema valuing body such as the above, one would expect some quality cinema. So what if there haven't been any promotions for such a film. Is it necessary for the so called cinema of the intellectuals?
The film is set in modern day Calcutta and Darjeeling and is based on an age old Bengali tradition called 'adda' where friends get together in the rains and exchange stories over drinks and dinner.
The story revolves around Ankur [Kay Kay Menon] and Rimli [Sonali Kulkarni], a newly-wed couple on their honeymoon in Darjeeling. The story takes a turn when Ankur disappears on the eve of their departure. The cop, Robin Datt [Vinay Pathak], tries to trace Ankur, but can't.
The suspects are a taxi driver Ankur had fought with and a mysterious looking man Bonny [Parvin Dabas], whom Rimli thought was following her throughout their trip in Darjeeling.
Two years later, Inspector Datt relates this story to a few friends [Rajat Kapoor, Simone Singh, Proshanth Narayanan, Sandhya Mridul] on a rainy night; they are intrigued by this story and question him about the outcome. But he has no answers. Fascinated by this story, they start a tale about the possible outcome and all take part to give their own versions where personalities and motif change.
Kay Kay Menon is once again in his elements. Sonali Kulkarni is a revelation. Displaying a wide range of emotions, she simply rocks. The script has given this actress the license to thrill. And she does it in style. Rajat Kapoor, Simone Singh, Sandhya Mridul and Parvin Dabbas as the stalker all combine well to complement the others. Proshant Narayanan gives a powerhouse performance. His demeanor, body language, dialogue delivery are all in sync with the moment.
On the whole Via Darjeeling is a film released without promotions and publicity. The film is interesting but still an average as far as the script is concerned. The film will not do much at box office.

If you like suspense, drama, art movies then it is a good movie. A power acting performance by Vinay pathak, Sonali Kulkarni and Kay-2.
It keeps you guessing till end though it end is an anticlimax.
