Movie Report
Sujoy Ghosh's Aladin is a film set in a fantasy land called Khwaish. In this film Sujoy Ghosh does make a decent attempt to interpret the anecdotes of Aladin in his own cinematic language. His inspiration to present the Arabic character is good but the execution tends to become formulaic.
Aladin Chatterjee [Riteish Deshmukh] lives in the city of Khwaish, an orphan who has been bullied since childhood by Kasim [Sahil Khan] and his gang. But his life changes when Jasmine [Jacqueline Fernandez] gives him a magic lamp-because it lets loose the genie Genius [Amitabh Bachchan]. Desperate to grant him 3 wishes and seek the end of his contract with the Magic Lamp, the rock-star Genius makes Aladin's life difficult until the real threat looms on the horizon: the ex-genie Ringmaster [Sanjay Dutt]. Why does Ringmaster want to kill Aladin? What is the dark secret about Aladin's past that Genius is carrying? And what is Aladin's destiny?, forms the rest of the story.
The VFX effects supervised by Charles Darby comprise of some decently done sequences. Sabu Cyril's art direction gives a fantasy feel to the hill-station town. There's too much of song and dance and Vishal-Shekhar's musical score is just passable. The bound script written by Sujoy Ghosh, Ritesh Shah and Suresh Nair opens up to an assortment of Bollywood cliches.
Acting wise, Ritesh Deshmukh is perfect for role of Aladin. He is capable of giving the expressions for the kind of role. Amitabh Bachchan is energetic as the Genie but gets loud and animated at times. Jacqueline Fernandez looks dazzling. She has done her part well. Ratna Pathak Shah has no scope. Mita Vashisht and Archana Puran Singh are fine.
On the whole, Aladin is an average film that transports you to fantasyland. This film does not have anything special in terms of story and narration. This film may be liked by kids and grown-ups if they are willing to take a trip to fantasyland.
