Movie Report
Wake Up Sid directed by debutant director Ayan Mukherjee is a mature love story. This film recalls the memorable moments of your life that lay at some remote corner of your mind. This is a slice of a life film. However it is not real in concept but director Ayan Mukherjee has presented it realistically.
Wake Up Sid is a story of young man Siddharth [Ranbir Kapoor] from Mumbai whose life undergoes a series of changes after taking his final year college exams. Siddharth is an irresponsible, immature lad who is so dependent on his parents and their wealth. He has a rich father, a doting mother and a bunch of friends who he moves out with. Life is set. It couldn't be better. He even has credit cards to fund his extravagant lifestyle.
Aisha [Konkona Sen Sharma] comes to Mumbai from Kolkata in search of her identity. She has a dream of becoming a writer and she knows this is the city of dreams. Sid and Aisha meet on the last day of college when she comes in with one of their friends. Despite their contrasting personalities, Sid becomes Aisha's first friend in the city. They hit it off instantly and go on to become the best of friends. Sid helps her in her house hunting and even helps her set it up.
Sid allows for time to fly by over long drives, parties that stretch well into dawn, and endless hours doing absolutely nothing. But a series of circumstances and events compel him to take stock of his life and take a hard look at himself.
When the final year results are out, Sid is the only one who has failed. Upset, he insults his mother [Supriya Pathak] and refuses to apologize even after his dad [Anupam Kher] asks him to. Because he does not want to go by the rules laid down by his dad, he leaves home and finds shelter at Aisha's home. Here is where he begins to mature, seeing life from a different perspective. Helping him through is a confused Aisha. Confused because she thinks he is a kid and somewhere deep down she is slowly beginning to look at him 'differently'.
Ayan Mukerji packs in a solid punch in most parts of the film. The emotional moments especially gets you all moist-eyed. The humour too is well integrated in the sequences. Even the confrontation between the father and son is superb. Music [Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy] is melodious. Anil Mehta's cinematography is top notch. Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are just right.
Acting wise, both the leading actors are life of the film. Ranbir Kapoor is a supremely talented actor and he has proved it in this film with his excellent performance. Konkana Sen Sharma no doubt a mature actress. She has given a natural and effortless performance. Anupam Kher and Supriya Pathak are brilliant. Namit Das and Shikha Talsania are perfect. Rahul Khanna doesn't get any scope.
On the Whole, Wake Up Sid is a great work by Ayan Mukherjee. This is a well made film and presented in a realistic way. This film will surely have a positive response from viewers specially from youth.
