Children of men is a fiction thriller. It is the story of strife and selfishness of mankind set in the future.
The year is 2027. Women have become infertile leaving no scope for the future of human race. The last baby was born 19 years ago. With the passage of time the hope of mankind too, is passing away. The society of the earth is in crisis. There is lawlessness, fighting and the social system is broken up. Some people have accepted this situation while others form their own groups for the betterment of the society.
One country however has been able to save itself from the conflicts. That country is Great Britain and it has been able to do so because of military rule. This also makes it an attraction point for illegal refugees who are always dealt with deportation. In this country lives one of the main characters of the movie, Theo Faron (Clive Owen). Theo was once an activist and had some painful experiences. Now he is a bureaucrat who has shielded himself from the concerns of the world and his pain by simply not caring about it.
He has a friend Jasper (Michael Caine), who resides in the countryside. He is the only one with whom he has some moments of cheer. They were once fellow activists and now they share their happy memories with great delight. With the change in time they find themselves alienated.
Theo gets involved in the same world about which he doesn’t care when he is kidnapped and brought before Julian Taylor (Julianne Moore). Julian was once Theo’s lover and a fellow activist. Now she heads a secret group fighting for the rights of the remaining refugee population. She needs a favour from Theo. She wants him to acquire transit papers for Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), a member of her group who needs a safe passage out of the country.
Theo agrees to do so because of Julian and also because he would acquire 5,000 pounds in the process. Soon Theo joins Kee and the other members in a mission filled with dangers clearing several security checkpoints to the coast. Here they are helped by the members of Human Project, a group of intelligent men who are preparing a new society. Trouble comes in the form of terrorists who are tracking them and their mission is to acquire Kee, who happens to be not just a refugee but an eight month pregnant woman.
Kee is the hope of the planet and also the hope of politicians and anarchists who want her child to serve their respective purposes. Kee and Theo are now on the run, desperately seeking a safe place and thus inadvertently become the hope of a new generation.
