I'm open minded about India job: Chappell

New Delhi : India cricket coach Greg Chappell Tuesday said he has an "open" mind about the top job, but stressed that he would not comment on the issue until the key Indian board meetings this weekend.

"I am open minded and will wait until after the meeting before I do or say anything," Chappell told IANS in an e-mail reply, indicating that he has not spoken to media.

Chappell's contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is till April end, but it is effectively over following India's World Cup debacle in the West Indies as there is no international match this month.

But rumour mills are working overtime, speculating whether Chappell and the support staff would get an extension after India's first-round exit from the World Cup. The Rahul Dravid-led side lost two of the three matches, including one to minnows Bangladesh, on their way out.

The BCCI has called for three important meetings Friday and Saturday in Mumbai.

On Friday, the BCCI office-bearers, including its president Sharad Pawar, will meet among themselves and then with former India captains to find ways to take the Indian cricket forward.

Chappell, physiotherapist John Gloster, trainer Gregory King, bio mechanist Ian Frazer will also meet the top BCCI officials that day.

The next day, the BCCI working committee will meet to discuss the World Cup performance and decide whether Chappell's and the support staff's contracts would be renewed or a new set of appointments would be made.

During Chappell's stint, India played 62 One-day Internationals, won 32, lost 27 and three matches ended in a no result'. In Test matches, India did better under the former Australia captain. They played 18 matches, won seven, lost four and drew seven.

The BCCI will have to take a quick decision on the captain and the coach as India's next assignment is a tour of Bangladesh in May.

The first match, a One-day International, is on May 10 in Mirpur.

Later, India will tour England and Scotland. The team will play three Test matches and seven One-day Internationals besides one ODI in Scotland.
