Amarinder moves court for anticipatory bail
Chandigarh : Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh Wednesday moved an application before the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking anticipatory bail in a corruption case registered against him by the state's vigilance department.
The bail plea will be taken up by the high court Thursday.
Amarinder Singh's counsel stated that his client was presently in Britain and was likely to come back shortly. He said that Amarinder Singh feared that the Punjab police would arrest him at the Delhi airport itself in connection with the case as the new Akali Dal-led government in the state wanted to settle scores with him.
The vigilance department had last month registered cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code against Amarinder and 17 others, including former ministers and officials.
The matter related to the contract of a mega project - the Ludhiana City Centre - being given to a particular construction company. The vigilance department alleged that the multi-million-rupee project was given after the company paid bribes worth Rs.1 billion.
