Amar Singh gets Election Commission noticeNew Delhi : The Election Commission Friday issued notice to Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh on a petition seeking his unseating from the Rajya Sabha on the ground that he was holding an office of profit.
Singh, who chairs the Uttar Pradesh Development Council, has been asked to file a written reply by March 31.
Earlier in the day, Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon told reporters that a petition against Singh under articles 102 and 103 of the constitution had been made to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who has referred it to the commission for its opinion.
"The commission has to act according to the provisions of the constitution. The commission has to follow the legal and constitutional provisions and send the necessary opinion to the president and that process has started," Tandon said.
The commission had, earlier this week, recommended to the president that actor Jaya Bachchan, a Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP, be disqualified as she was holding an office of profit.
Bachchan heads the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation.
