New Delhi : Electricity supply in Madhya Pradesh is set to improve with the commissioning of the first 500-MW unit of the Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station (STPS) stage III Thursday by state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL).

BHEL is executing the main plant package contract of state-owned power major NTPC Ltd's 1,000-MW (2x500MW) Vindhyachal STPS - Stage III project valued at Rs.21.25 billion.

"With the synchronisation of the unit, 12 million units of electricity will be added to the grid of the power deficit state, every day," BHEL said in a statement.

Madhya Pradesh currently faces an estimated shortage of 1,500 MW of electricity affecting not only the common man but also industrial activities in the state.

With the commissioning of the first unit of Vindhyachal STPS stage III, the cumulative generating capacity of the power station has gone up to 2,760 MW.

The second set is also targeted for commissioning by BHEL in the current fiscal.

On completion of Stage III, the generating capacity of Vindhyachal STPS will be enhanced to 3,260 MW, making it India's largest power generating station.

For NTPC, BHEL is presently executing contracts at Kahalgaon STPS (1,500 MW) in Bihar, Vindhyachal STPS (1,000 MW) in Madhya Pradesh, Talcher STPS (2,000 MW) in Orissa, Sipat STPS (1,000 MW) in Chhattisgarh and Feroze Gandhi Unchahar TPS (210 MW) in Uttar Pradesh.
