I LOST MY SON

Sony met Ravi at a fitness center in Safdarjung Enclave, Delhi. A trainer there, Ravi, 29, was a great physical shape. He was also natural charmer. He was divorced, he told Sony. Tragically, the only child of that marriage died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Sony immediately felt compassion for Ravi. An interpreter for the deaf, Sony, 31, worked in local schools. But her career was not her main priority.

Sony wanted to get married and have a family.

Soon her dream would come true. She and Ravi were married on march 1, 1986 and in July Sony confirmed she was pregnant.
Shortly before the wedding, Ravi mentioned that he’d once been jailed for ‘misusing’ money at the bank where he worked. He blamed his first wife, saying she’d gone ‘crazy’ after their baby died and drove them in to debt. Actually Ravi had been convicted of misappropriating funds from the bank. Although he didn’t serve time for that charge, he was sent to prison on a bank robbery conviction. Sony wouldn’t learn until much later. After Sony’s child birth she often noticed that Ravi rarely held or cuddled his son. When he did, he turned the boy's face away.

Sony : You seem withdrawn from the baby lately.

Ravi : I don’t want to get too close to him.

But Sony always thought it strange when Ravi told he’d bought life insurance policy in the name of the infant.
Early on Sunday, August 22, 1987, Sony awake to the sound of crying through the baby monitor.

Ravi : I fed him.

Over the monitor, Sony could hear Ravi get the bottle and sit in the rocking chair. Minutes later, she heard patting on the sheet and assumed he was burping the baby. She checked on Tom. He was limp. She picked up and rushed into the master bedroom. Ravi emerged from the bathroom his face ashen.
Sony shouted : What did you do to him ?

Ravi : Nothing

Sony tried breathing life back into her baby. Ravi stood by, not saying a word. Moments later the emergency medical team arrived and rushed the baby to a hospital. Sony and Ravi ran out to their car. During the 15 minute ride, Ravi was silent, but Sony's thoughts raced. Why did Ravi choose to feed the baby this one time? Why did he have insurance on an infant? Because she thought, he knew Tom would not be coming home.
At the hospital, Sony tried to offer clues that her husband might have smothered their baby, but Ravi was standing there and no one picked up on her hints. Then a doctor appeared and said that nothing else could be done. Their child was dead. The deputy medical examiner determined that Tom demise was an ‘attended death’. Because he died in the care of doctors, there’d be no police investigation. Sony was taken to her parent’s house, where she collapsed. Ravi killed the baby for insurance money, she cried. Her family tried to comfort her.
Suddenly she discovered later that Ravi, who was living in C.R.Park and had filed for divorce. She never saw the papers. Ravi had remarried, but what stunned her most was that he had a new child. Blind love and foolish hope turned to rage and resolve. She feared he would try another insurance scam the he might kill again.
In May 1994, Sony hired Lara Ray, a former police detective who specialized in insurance fraud cases. 'We’ve to track down' said Ravi’s first wife. She said, ‘to see if this was a pattern,’ Sony only knew that ravi's other wife's name was Rakhi. Plugging ‘Rakhi’ and ‘Ravi’, Lara found their marriage license, social security numbers and divorce decree. Lara called Rakhi.

Lara : I’m a private investigator looking for information about Ravi. I’m working for his second wife, Sony.

Rakhi : He killed that woman’s baby too, didn’t he?

Rakhi was just 14 years old when she met Ravi in church. Ravi, then 19, was the youth choir director. By age 17, Rakhi had four abortions at Ravi’s urging. When she become pregnant again, a doctor refused to perform an abortion. The couple married in October 1980. sweety was born shortly after. One night when the infant was two months old, Rakhi went to bed ill. And Ravi gave Rakhi some vitamins, and she slept solidly until the next morning. By then, police had sealed off sweety’s room. The baby was death. Rakhi wept as Lara told her of Sony's suspicions.
But she made it clear that she wanted no part of the man or the case.

Lara: Sony do you’ve any receipts or documents from that time?

Sony recalled that Ravi had kept insurance policy receipts, copies of letters attempting to collect on them and cancelled cheques for new cars bought with the cash. Lara learned that Ravi had taken out 40,000 Rs. In life insurance policies of sweety. After her death he cashed them in and bought an expensive bike.
Late in autumn 1994, detective Abhay and his partner, detective Pratham, pored over Ravi's documents. Next they interviewed Rakhi.
As Rakhi told them her story, two things struck Abhay. The deaths of the infants seemed remarkably similar, and Ravi had asked Rakhi if she would ‘be okay’ if anything ‘happened’ to the baby.

Abhay and Pratham : What kind of man would ask that?

In May 1995, Abhay and Pratham knocked on the door of Ravi’s house where he lived with his new wife. Kim and their ten months old daughter, Neha. Ravi was shocked but polite.

Abhay : Why take out life insurance on an infant?

Ravi : My father had taken out insurance on my birth. That’s why I took out the 1,00,000 policy on Tom.

Abhay'S stomach lurched. He had known only of a 50,000 on the boy. Ravi policies both infant now added up to 190000 – 40,000 for sweety and 150000 for Tom. Finally there was a major break in the case.
By 1996, Sony was extremely frustrated. Abhay was now handling the case alone. The chief medical examiner reviews the post mortem examination; he noted that while tom was a healthy baby, at the time of death he had cerebral edema swelling of the brain. Tom died of airway smothering.
Abhay : It is my opinion that the manners of death for Ravi is homicide. With the cause of death known as a homicide and Rakhi signed statement in hand, Abhay aimed for an indictment and a warrant for Ravi's arrest.
When Ravi stepped on to the porch of the house, the officers approached, ‘ Are you Ravi’? A deputy sheriff asked.

Ravi : Yes, I am.

Deputy : You’re under arrest.

Ravi : But, why ?

Deputy : Homicide of your child.

Four hours later, when Sony learnt that Ravi had been arrested, she began crying in relief. But Ravi still remains in prison, also awaiting trial for the murder of his daughter Sweety and his son Tom.
