About Gurudwara Handi Sahib

Gurudwara Handi Sahib is situated in Danapur, a cantonment station, 20 kilometres west of old Patna City. It is a place where Guru Gobind Singh Ji and hundreds of His followers took langar from a small clay pot (handi). In 1670, when Guru Teg Bahadur Ji along with His family walked from Patna Sahib to Anandpur Sahib, the residents of Patna Sahib followed Guru Ji to see off Him. After walking 12 km, they all reached Danapur. People of Danapur gaved warm welcomed Guru Ji and an old lady served a potful (handi) of khichari (rice and lentils) to them after which this religious place was built here was named as Handiwali Sangat, which is now called Gurdwara handi Sahib. When that old lady requested Guru Ji to stay at this place for always, then Guru Ji replied, so long khichdi would be cooked in that Handi and would be served to sangat, you would feel my presence here. On listening Guru Ji's words, she turned her house to dharamshala and kept cooking the khichdi in that Handi and kept serving to sangat. So this place is known as Haandi Sahib.
