The Miracle
 By : Anil Vashistha ( Posted on :20 Sep, 2005 )Total Views : 454 | Previous | Next
She woke up with a start and realized it had only been a dream. She had had this dream before but each time she desired it to be true. She always hoped she could hold on to the feeling just a little while longer but the cruel sun always came back to curb her craving. She looked out the window and saw a dismal lucid sky. She hated the clear blue. In fact she hated colour. Colour was not meant for the earth. It was meant to be in her dreams, only in her dreams. She could see birds flying in the sky and she loathed the sight. The green of the trees looked gruesome. Her mother had done this on purpose. She knew it. She would come in every morning and open the drapes so she could see the wretched panorama outside. She detested her mother. She closed her eyes and tried to get back to sleep where everything was beautiful. But the dream was lost in the recesses of her mind. She tried hard to get it back but failed.

She then heard the voices. They had all come. Her glass of milk lay by her bedside but she wasn't hungry anymore. She was never hungry There was always food kept by her bedside. There were hideous red apples and large variety of repulsive fruits. Her mother always did this on purpose. The voices grew louder. She was used to them now. They did this every morning. She knew her mother wanted her to be able to walk some day so she would become a part of this despicable world. They came in large groups now and prayed every morning to someone called God. It always amused her. Who was God anyway? She knew He was someone like her mother. Only the likes of her mother could be so cruel to her. The voices were now deafening. They would now come towards the room and they all would lay their hands on her legs. She knew the routine. She waited for them. There was no point fighting it. She had to go through this every morning. It was a cruel ploy of God.

She turned away from the door and saw the drapes of the windows closed. That surprised her. She could have sworn she saw them open a minute ago. She reached out to open them but couldn't reach them. She heard a voice in her head telling her the drapes had to be opened and soon. They would all be inside any minute now. She reached out again but fell from the bed. She pushed herself up with all her might and got on her knees but couldn't open them still. She tried hard again, just a little closer. She made one last attempt and pulled them open.

The door opened and they were all in. They stood in silence. Her mother looked at her and slowly walked towards her. Then she realized. She was standing! She could feel her legs. Her mother touched her legs and shouted praises to God. She was crying. She never saw her mother look this beautiful. She saw outside and saw the clear blue skies and the pretty white birds and the lush green trees. Where had they all been before! She looked at all the people around her. They had been here so many times before but she had never noticed how devout they all looked. She screamed in delight and staggered ahead. She could do it. She saw her mother and knew she could do it. Within a few steps she was walking normally. She felt like she had been walking all the seven years of her life. Her mother held her and she felt her warmth rushing through her body. And this time she wasn't dreaming. It was real!

She ran towards her bedside and took a large bite of a juicy luscious apple and looked outside the window. There a few grey clouds now and they were forming a silhouette. She knew they were telling her something. She strained her eyes and tried to figure out. And then she knew. She clearly saw the sign of the cross.
